When specifying a sliding gate operator, the first question is often AC or DC. The wrong choice can mean overheating and frequent failures. This article compares GEPIN GPK (AC) with the DC Smart operator.
How they work
AC operators use an AC capacitor motor. Inrush is higher and heat builds up under frequent cycling. Examples: GPK-500 and the GPD heavy-duty series.
DC operators use a brushless DC motor with electronic speed control — cooler and more efficient. Example: the GEPIN DC Smart Gate Operator.
Comparison
| Item | AC (GPK/GPD) | DC Smart |
|---|---|---|
| Price | ✅ Lower, more budget flexibility | Higher (features built in) |
| Continuous duty | Needs rest between cycles | ✅ Suitable for long running |
| Overheating risk | High-frequency use overheats easily | ✅ Low |
| Start / stop | Direct start, some jerk | ✅ Soft start / soft stop, smooth and quiet |
| Speed control | Fixed | ✅ Adjustable |
| Anti-crush | Needs an external safety edge | ✅ Built-in smart anti-crush |
| Spare parts | ✅ Simple structure, parts easy to source | Control board is OEM-only |
| Best for | Low frequency (<30 cycles/day) | Parking and high-frequency traffic |
When to choose AC
AC operators cost less, use a mature design, and parts are easy to find. For low-frequency sites they are enough — no need to pay for unused features.
GPK-500 suits typical residential communities (under 30 cycles/day) on 110V/220V. Specs: 500 kg, 8 m width, only 13 kg — easy to install and service.
When to choose DC Smart
- Parking with hundreds of cycles per day
- Commercial driveways that need speed adjustment
- A smoother, quieter open/close with soft start and soft stop
- Existing AC units that overheat and need an upgrade
DC Smart: 600 kg, 8 m width, onboard radio with 2 transmitters, and a base adjuster.
DC Smart has built-in anti-crush and protection. If it detects unusual resistance, it stops immediately to protect the board and motor.
If the gate itself does not run freely (worn rack, loose chain, uneven track, overweight leaf, misaligned wheels/guides), protection will trip often:
- The gate stops and will not complete a cycle
- Repeated trips wear parts faster
- In severe cases the control board can burn out
Before install: have a specialist confirm the drive system (rack, chain, track, leaf weight). Call +886-4-2422-6333 with questions.
Scene guide
| Scene | Gate weight | Frequency | Recommended |
|---|---|---|---|
| Residential community, under 20 units | < 500 kg | Low (<30/day) | GPK-500 (AC) |
| Parking / commercial driveway | < 600 kg | High (20+ per hour) | DC Smart |
| Large community / heavy iron gate | 600–2500 kg | Low to medium | GPD1500–2500 |
| Factory driveway / large parking | > 600 kg | High frequency | GPD + VFD |
If the leaf exceeds the DC Smart 600 kg limit but still needs many cycles a day, the practical answer is a GPD heavy-duty unit plus a VFD.
- Optional three-phase motor handles heat better than a single-phase capacitor motor
- A VFD adds soft start/stop, cutting inrush by about 60% and extending mechanical life
- Daily cycle capacity rises enough for factories and busy parking
