In gate operator selection, one scenario is especially easy to get wrong: a very heavy gate that also needs heavy daily traffic. This demand is common at factory driveways, logistics centers, and large parking lots, yet buyers are often steered to the wrong model—leading to frequent failures or early replacement.
This article starts from the principles and explains why the GPD series with a variable frequency drive (VFD) is currently the most stable solution for this scenario.
First, confirm your situation
| Your scenario | Suitable model |
|---|---|
| Typical residential community (gate < 1000kg, low frequency) | GPK series |
| Heavy gate + low-frequency traffic | GPD series (standard configuration) |
| Heavy gate + high-frequency traffic ← covered in this article | ⭐ GPD series + VFD |
Why can’t a standard AC unit handle high-frequency use?
Typical GPK series units use a single-phase capacitor motor. Each start has a large current surge and concentrated coil heat. More than about 20–30 cycles per hour easily builds up heat, triggering thermal protection frequently—and in severe cases burning the motor windings.
For heavy gates that also need frequent daily traffic, the GPD series is the right foundation. Add a VFD with a three-phase motor to unlock soft start/stop, cooler running, and much higher daily cycle capacity.
How to choose the GPD motor and VFD?
The GPD series can be configured with a single-phase or three-phase motor depending on on-site power supply, then decide whether to add a VFD based on usage needs. Differences among the combinations:
| Configuration | Motor | VFD | VFD input power | Soft start | Heat resistance | Gearbox life |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard configuration | Single-phase or three-phase (per on-site power) |
None | — | ✗ | Normal | Normal |
| ⭐ Recommended upgrade High-frequency scenarios |
Three-phase motor | ✅ Add-on | Single-phase or three-phase OK | ✅ Soft start / soft stop | ✅ Less prone to overheating | ✅ Significantly extended |
The VFD itself can take single-phase or three-phase input. Even if the site only has single-phase power, it can still drive a three-phase motor. You do not need to worry that on-site power will not match.
Three major benefits of a three-phase motor with VFD
The VFD lets the motor ramp up slowly from zero to the set speed, instead of the traditional “full speed the moment power is applied.” Starting current surge drops significantly, and stress on the rack and gearbox at each start also decreases, so gearbox life can be extended substantially.
Three-phase motor current is distributed evenly, so coil temperature rise is far slower than with single-phase capacitor motors. Daily open/close capacity increases significantly, fully meeting high-frequency needs for parking lots and factory driveways.
The VFD can set motor speed ratios so gate open/close speed matches site needs:
- Driveway entrance needs fast passage → increase speed
- Mixed pedestrian areas → reduce speed for safer closing
- Heavy gates with high inertia → set soft stop to avoid slamming into limit switches
GPD model recommendations with VFD
| Model | Max. load | Power | VFD recommendation | Applications |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| GPD1500 | 1500kg | 0.55kW | Optional | Large communities, mid-size parking lots |
| GPD2000 | 2000kg | 0.65kW | Optional | Heavy steel gates, large parking lots |
| GPD2500 | 2500kg | 0.75kW | Optional (strongly recommended) Three-phase motor only | Factories, logistics centers |
※ For high-frequency heavy-load scenarios (20–30+ cycles per hour), adding a VFD delivers the clearest benefit.
Checklist before installation
Even the best machine needs a good drive system to reach its expected service life. With rack, chain, and guide rails in good condition, start resistance stays stable, motor and gearbox load stay within design range, and long-term use is far less likely to go wrong.
- Regularly check rack, chain, and guide rails and keep them running smoothly
- Actual gate weight must stay within the selected model’s limit
- Smooth manual push/pull of the gate is a basic indicator of good drive condition
